Play puzzles for fun and a better mind

Looking forward to your weekend to play some brainy games?

Studies have shown that brain teasers have positive effects on the mind, and people who play these kinds of games have a better stress index and are more attentive.

Video games aren’t just entertainment, they can also be used in many different ways, like to educate and even rehabilitate individuals from certain conditions. And in that regard, when it comes to positive effects, brainy games are always on top!

And if you’re interested in trying out a new game, we have seven word and number based games for you to play.

So take a seat, get comfy, pick out your first brainy game and enjoy!

Five game insights we think will pique your interest!

First

As we said earlier, gaming isn’t just entertainment. There are many ways to creatively employ this medium in other tasks, such as education. Walmart uses a game to onboard new employees and promote safe workplace practices. They use a digital platform where employees play a quick five-minute game to answer questions related to their jobs. Participation is high at 91%, and recordable incidents have dropped 54%.

Remember Tetris? You know, that very addicting puzzle game involving specifically shaped blocks falling on top of one another? Well, it has a very interesting backstory and a Soviet-era origin, with a history that’s more reminiscent of an action thriller movie, something you wouldn’t expect from a very simple and innocent-looking game!

Speaking of Russians, you might’ve heard of the name Garry Kasparov, a person synonymous with Chess and nigh-impossible levels of tactical mastery in the game. Known as the most skilled Chess player of all time, he’s also written a book where he explains that the wise and rational decisions made on a chessboard can be equated to real-life decision-making.

(And our co-founder Nate regularly plays 1 min blitz chess a dozen times a day!)

Ever played Scrabble or any word game? If you’re interested in linguistics and letter games in general, you may have wondered what’s the longest you could possibly come up with. Aside from language differences and other factors, this line of thought and the search for the longest word in the world is probably fruitless. But why is that?

You’re probably aware that many famous people play video games. But would you ever guess that Patrick Stewart, an actor famous for his roles in Star Trek and X-Men, enjoyed playing a puzzle game on a Gameboy? He was a fan of Tetris, and he fondly remarked “My Gameboy is my constant companion when I’m working. It continues to amuse me.”

After all, a good puzzle amuses and enriches. When faced with a conundrum, John Green from the novel Paper Towns would say:

“Every puzzle has an answer.”
