Ever seen an angel?

No, not the usual white wings and halos, but more otherworldly and surreal ones. The Angelarium is the place where you can see a different take on their visage.

Do you ever wonder what angels look like? No, not the fair maidens and young children with halos and white wings. We mean the more otherworldly versions of them, the ones that really warrant the warning of “Do not be afraid”. The Biblically accurate versions of them can be really shocking, so people tend to prefer the more aesthetically pleasing versions of angels instead.

The Angelarium is one of the more surreal and metaphysical iterations of angels available online. What’s more, these abstract angels all have their own narratives and aspects, and they’re also available in physical products like books and tarot cards for you to check out.

Five game insights we think will pique your interest!

First

There’s an older game loosely based on the narrative poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri that was a massive hit when it came out. Dante’s Inferno puts you in the shoes of a templar knight fighting unholy forces in a complex story of revenge and redemption. Unfortunately, it’s quite hard to find a digital version of it nowadays, but old gamers definitely have a physical copy of it somewhere in their attics!

What is with the mid-2000s and holy and demonic powers? Because, yet again, we have another successful XBOX 360-era game to tell you about. Darksiders is a more straightforward story of the conflict between angels and demons, this time, more based on the Abrahamic scriptures of Armageddon. In the game, the seventh seal is broken, triggering the End War of Heaven, Hell and with man crushed in-between.

What if we told you there’s an obscure NES game about a cherub trying to rescue his friends from kidnappers? Chubby Cherub is a game where you’re an angel who needs to constantly eat to keep flying and you also have to fight the stray dogs in your neighborhood. It’s definitely a lot less serious in plot than the previous titles we mentioned, but it’s a fun game nonetheless!

Lost and looking for guidance from holy figures and powers? Don’t be shocked, but yes, there’s an angelic version of the Magic 8 Ball. You know, the one where you think of a question out loud then give the ball a good shake? Angel Guidance Board is similar in nature but with dice and board pieces.

Regardless if you’re a devout believer in higher powers and the supernatural, angels have always been a staple in any media. Books, movies, TV series and games… all of them portray angels having divinity and power of a certain degree that is downright awe-inspiring.

Back before the advent of modern visual technology, artists and religious movements have always depicted angels in a human-like form. Seeing angels gave people hope and happiness, and with the power of art, media and the video games of today, those feelings can be brought to even further heights.

And to that, we share this quote from Gyles Brandreth, British broadcaster, writer and former politician:

“Playing games can contribute to making you happy, perhaps even without therapy.”
